The Photoreal Revolution
When Hasbro introduced Photo Real face printing to The Vintage Collection in 2018, it marked a turning point for the entire 3.75” line. Suddenly, human characters didn’t look like soft-molded approximations of actors—they looked like the actors. Eyes were sharp. Skin tones were natural. Eyebrows weren’t floating half an inch above the sculpt. The line finally caught up with its own ambition.
But here’s the problem: Hundreds of figures released before 2018 still exist with incredible sculpts buried under outdated paint apps.
These figures aren’t bad. In fact, many of them are excellent—the sculpting, proportions, and articulation are often top-tier. But the paint? The paint is holding them back. These are the figures that could become definitive with nothing more than a modern deco pass.
1. VC04 — Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues)
The sculpt is elite. The paint is 2010. Luke’s Bespin look is one of the most iconic costumes in the entire saga. The VC04 figure nails the outfit—the fatigues, the holster, the proportions, the articulation. It’s a brilliant sculpt that still holds up today. But the face? It’s the definition of pre-Photo Real limitations. The eyes are soft and slightly misaligned, and the skin tone is flat. A Photo Real update would instantly elevate this into the “definitive Luke” conversation.
2. VC13 — Anakin Skywalker (Revenge of the Sith)
A near-perfect sculpt trapped behind decade-old paint. The 2010 ROTS Anakin captures Hayden Christensen’s silhouette perfectly. However, the face paint is soft and glossy, lacking the intensity that defines Anakin’s fall. Instead of a conflicted Jedi Knight on the edge of darkness, the paint makes him look like a 2005 multipack leftover. Photo Real would add the proper eye-shading and accurate hair color this “Sith Apprentice” needs.
3. VC12 — Darth Sidious (ROTS)
A terrifying sculpt hidden behind one of the weakest paint apps in early TVC. The original VC12 Darth Sidious features a brilliant sculpt—the hood, the wrinkles, the posture. But the face paint is so imprecise it drains the menace out of the character. Instead of a sinister Sith Lord, we get something closer to a melted candle. Deepened wrinkles and sharper, piercing eyes are a must for a reissue.
4. VC02 — Princess Leia (Hoth Outfit)
A beloved figure with a sculpt that deserves modern paint. Leia’s Hoth outfit captures the quilted vest and braids beautifully. While this figure has seen minor “refresh” attempts in the past, a dedicated 2026-standard Photo Real reissue would finally give Carrie Fisher’s likeness the sharpness it deserves.
5. VC07 — Dak Ralter
A fan-favorite pilot with a sculpt that’s begging for Photo Real. The VC07 figure nails the pilot gear—the chest box, the helmet, and the flight suit. But the face paint is soft and glossy. Dak is the loyal friend who believed he could take on the whole Empire; a Photo Real update would finally give his portrait the respect it deserves.
6. VC31 — Obi-Wan Kenobi (Attack of the Clones)
A surprisingly strong sculpt buried under early-TVC paint. The AOTC Obi-Wan features a great sculpt for the hair, beard, and Jedi robes. However, the paint is soft and the eyes are fuzzy.
Collector Note: While a version of this appeared in a specialty set, a definitive, single-carded release with the same fidelity as the recent Wandering Jedi figure is the “Grail” update fans are waiting for.
7. VC33 — Padmé Amidala (Peasant Disguise)
One of the best Padmé sculpts ever made—ruined by outdated paint. Padmé figures are rare in TVC, and the Peasant Disguise sculpt is premium. The eyes are currently flat and the eyebrows are fuzzy. A Photo Real update would transform this Natalie Portman likeness into a top-tier collector favorite.
8. VC36 — Senate Guard
The helmet hides the face—but the face under the helmet is shocking. The blue robes and armor of the Senate Guard are striking. However, under the helmet is a generic human face with 2011-era paint. If Hasbro ever reissued this with a removable helmet option, the Photo Real upgrade would be essential for that high-end display.
9. VC68 — Rebel Fleet Trooper
A great army builder with a face that desperately needs modern paint. The Rebel Fleet Trooper is a staple of any ANH display.
Collector Note: A Photo Real version was packed with the Tantive IV corridor, but that makes troop building impossible for the average collector. We need this update released as an individual “Mainline” card so fans can finally build their 2026-standard Rebel army.
10. VC85 — Quinlan Vos
A fan-favorite Jedi with a sculpt that deserves better. The VC85 figure captures the Expanded Universe look perfectly—the hair, the tattoos, and the robes. But the face paint is soft and lacks intensity. The tattoos lack definition, and the eyes are flat. Quinlan Vos deserves a modern “ink” job.
Why These 10 Figures Matter
Updating these figures wouldn’t just improve individual displays—it would make the entire Vintage Collection feel more cohesive. A wall of TVC cardbacks should look like a unified collection, not a timeline of evolving paint technology.
