Overview
Cobra Commander is figure #06 in the G.I. Joe Classified Series, Wave 2, 2020 at $19.99. He arrives with the battle helmet — the chrome visor and blue battle helm that has defined the character in the animated Sunbow series and across countless figure releases. The question of helmet versus hood has followed every Cobra Commander figure since 1982, and Hasbro made the right call for a modern collector launch: the battle helmet is the most iconic and the most visually imposing.
Wave 2 also produced the Regal variant (GJC-006B) — a lighter blue version available through Hasbro Pulse. The difference is meaningful: the retail #06 is a darker, richer blue that gives the figure a more imposing, less cartoon-accurate appearance; the Regal version is lighter, closer to the Sunbow animated colours. Both share the same sculpt and accessories.

Cobra Commander’s real identity has been one of the most debated questions in GI Joe lore. The Larry Hama Marvel Comics eventually revealed him as a used car salesman from Springfield who became radicalised after a series of personal tragedies — a far more interesting origin than a simple supervillain. The Sunbow cartoon presented him as a more straightforwardly cartoonish villain: shrill, incompetent, constantly scheming, regularly undermined by his own subordinates. Both versions are valid, and the tension between them is part of what makes the character compelling across different reader/viewer generations.
Original Figure Comparison
The original 1982 Cobra Commander came in two forms: the battle helmet (mass retail) and the hood (mail-away). The Classified #06 commits to the battle helmet and updates it with specific design choices. The ridge along the top of the helmet mirrors the Sunbow animated version specifically — it’s a detail not present on the original toy but immediately recognisable to cartoon fans. The visor geometry is more streamlined than the vintage figure, with snake-like curved edges. The overall silhouette is immediately identifiable while being a distinctly modern interpretation.
The Snake Motif
The Classified Cobra Commander commits harder to the snake imagery than any previous figure. The GeneralsJoes review catalogued it well: “the top portion and tails of his jacket features scales for that snake motif”; the gauntlets have raised Cobra emblems; the boots look like “medieval suit of armor, only more functional.” The Lyles Movie Files review noted: “Hasbro sculptors incorporate the snake in subtle and obvious fashion, which seems very much like an on-brand decision from Cobra Commander.” Everything about this figure visually reinforces who this person is — the head of a snake-themed terrorist organisation who has leaned fully into the metaphor.
The cape, belt, and bandolier across the chest are separate sculpted pieces but are not removable. They integrate so well into the overall design that this causes no real issue.
The Figure
The standard Classified articulation scheme. The GeneralsJoes review noted that the narrow arm sculpt makes the elbow articulation feel particularly poseable — the joints work with the proportions rather than being restricted by them. The secondary chest strap limits torso movement slightly, and the jacket limits leg extension — neither is significant for the poses Cobra Commander actually needs to achieve.
Action Figure Barbecue confirmed the full joint count: swivel/hinge ankles, boot swivels, double-hinged knees, swivel thighs, ball-jointed drop-down hips, ball-jointed waist, mid-torso hinge, butterfly pecs, swivel/hinge shoulders, bicep swivels, double-hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, ball-jointed neck base, hinged neck, ball-jointed head.
Accessories
Pistol — ornate snake-themed revolver-style blaster with a snake climbing up to the barrel, scaled grip, and small bayonet at the tip. Lyles Movie Files called it “easily my favorite of the smaller guns in the line so far.” No paint on the handle was noted as a missed opportunity, but the sculpt itself is outstanding.
Dagger — gold hilt, jagged blade with decorative elements. Lyles Movie Files: “His dagger is very cool with a gold hilt and the blade has its own grip in case Cobra Commander wants to vary his fighting style.” The jagged blade is a design choice.
4 interchangeable hands — right pointing hand, left fist, plus two weapon-holding hands. The pointing hand specifically enables Cobra Commander’s signature histrionic gesturing poses — critical for the character’s display personality.
The Regal Variant (GJC-006B)
The Hasbro Pulse exclusive Cobra Commander (Regal) is the same sculpt and accessories with a lighter, more cartoon-accurate blue. Which version is “correct” depends entirely on whether you’re after the animated Sunbow accuracy (Regal) or the more imposing darker colour (retail). Both are excellent. The Regal sold through quickly at launch and commands a secondary market premium.
Cobra Commander in the Classified Line
As the head of Cobra, Commander is the anchor of the villain side of any Classified display. He’s received multiple additional versions across the line — the Snake Supreme PulseCon exclusive (#09), and eventually the SDCC 2024 “Once a Man” version (#130) among others — but #06 retail is the foundation. Get this one first.
Verdict
Cobra Commander #06 is an exceptional figure — the snake motif design work is thorough and satisfying, the helmet calls back to both the vintage toy and Sunbow animation, and the ornate pistol is the best small weapon in Wave 2. The four interchangeable hands enable the theatrical gesturing poses the character demands. Essential for any Classified collection.
