Release Year: ID: ahsoka-baylan-skol-bs-2023

The Baylan Skoll figure in The Black Series captures one of the most compelling and nuanced characters introduced in the Ahsoka series. As a survivor of Order 66 turned mercenary for hire, Baylan brings a weary, philosophical weight to the dark side. This figure seeks to translate the late Ray Stevenson’s powerful screen presence into a 6-inch scale, utilizing a combination of intricate armor detailing and specialized accessory work. While it has sparked discussion within the collector community regarding its scale, it remains a pivotal release for completing the villainous hierarchy of the series.

The sculpt is a highlight of this release, particularly the weathered look of the upper body armor and shoulder bells. The shoulder bells are notably made of a very soft plastic and attached via an o-ring system, allowing them to shift and pivot significantly during posing without hindering the arm’s range of motion. The head sculpt is an excellent likeness of Ray Stevenson, capturing his signature stern expression and groomed beard with “Photo Real” precision. The body is clad in a mix of heavy armor and layered tunics, with a plastic skirt piece providing the lower-half silhouette.

The lightsaber is the figure’s most unique accessory. Unlike the standard crimson of the Sith, Baylan wields a blade with a distinct orange-red hue, reflecting his unique status as neither Jedi nor Sith. The blade itself is significantly longer than those found on regular Black Series lightsabers, mirroring the broadsword-style reach Baylan utilizes in the show. The hilt features a hook that allows it to hang from the belt when not in use.

Articulation is standard for modern Black Series figures, featuring 17 points of articulation including butterfly joints in the shoulders. These joints are vital for Baylan’s heavy, two-handed fighting style. Despite the plastic skirt, the ball-jointed hips and knees allow for stable, wide-set dueling stances. However, collectors have noted that the figure’s height is slightly underscaled compared to the actor’s actual height, making him appear only marginally taller than his apprentice, Shin Hati.

The deco is well-executed, particularly the metallic finish on the armor plating and the subtle weathering on the tunics. The paint applications on the face are sharp, bringing out the weary determination in the character’s eyes. While this initial release lacks the soft-goods robe seen in later versions, the molded details on the chest and shoulders provide a high level of visual fidelity for the armored look he sports during his duel with Ahsoka on Seatos.

Technical Details & Sculpt

Overall Sculpt & Proportions

The sculpt captures the “Heavy Knight” aesthetic of the character:

  • Stern, stoic facial likeness of Ray Stevenson.
  • Layered armor and tunic textures.
  • Soft-plastic, o-ring mounted shoulder bells.
  • Detailed utility belt with saber hook.

Note: The figure stands approximately 6.5 inches, which is slightly short for the character’s intended scale relative to others in the line.

Head & Face

  • Photo Real paint application.
  • Accurate graying beard and hair.
  • Intense, focused gaze.

Articulation

Baylan’s articulation is built for heavy, powerful posing:

  • Butterfly joints in the shoulders.
  • Ball-jointed shoulders, elbows, and wrists.
  • Ball-jointed upper body (under chest armor).
  • Ball-jointed hips.
  • Ball-jointed knees and ankles.

The soft shoulder bells are a standout feature, moving with the arm rather than blocking it.

Display & Photography Notes
