Astromech Droid 3-Pack (R2-A3, R5-K6, R2-F2) — Star Wars The Black Series
The Black Series Astromech Droid 3-Pack — Toys'R'Us exclusive, SDCC 2016 online then retail. $54.99 for all three. Three Yavin Battle astromechs: R2-A3 (Wedge Antilles), R5-K6 (Garven Dreis / Red Leader), R2-F2 (Biggs Darklighter). Each undersized. R2-A3 and R2-F2 use R2-D2 mold with 7 accessories each (sensorscope, periscope, 3 loose dome panels, 2 leg panels). R5-K6 is R5-unit mold with only 2 leg panel accessories. All share dome-rotates-middle-leg mechanism.
Overview
The Astromech Droid 3-Pack is a Toys’R’Us exclusive first available online during San Diego Comic Con 2016, and later carried at regular Toys’R’Us stores. $54.99 for the complete set. The three droids are all from the Battle of Yavin in A New Hope — the astromechs assigned to three of the pilots who flew that mission:
R2-A3 — Wedge Antilles’ droid. Wedge and R2-A3 were forced to withdraw after engine damage.
R5-K6 — Garven Dreis’ droid. Dreis was Red Leader of Red Squadron. Both Dreis and R5-K6 were shot down in the assault.
R2-F2 — Biggs Darklighter’s droid. Both Biggs and R2-F2 perished at Yavin.
Together they’re the most complete Yavin X-wing astromech display the Black Series 6” line offered in the Phase 3 era. For collectors building a Yavin hangar scene, this is the set.
The Figures
All three droids share the same 10-joint base articulation: 360° rotating dome (which mechanically moves the middle leg in and out), swivel hips, swivel ankles, openable front body panels (tools pull out), and movable tools. Each foot has two wheels for stable footing — better than the single-wheel design on older 3¾” astromechs. No electronics in any of the three. All are undersized compared to full-height humanoid Black Series figures, which is a shared known limitation of the R2-D2 mold generation.
R2-A3 and R2-F2 use the R2-D2 mold — rounded dome with three dome holes, front panels, and two outer leg panels. Each comes with 7 accessories: sensorscope, periscope (both plug into dome holes), three removable dome panels, and two outer leg panels. The dome panels fit only very loosely and will likely fall out when the figure is picked up to carry — fine for shelf display, something to know for handling. A third dome hole on both has no purpose on these droids (it was the lightsaber plug slot on R2-D2). The leg panel holes exist where booster rockets would attach on R2-D2, but no rockets are included.
R5-K6 uses an R5-unit mold — the distinctive conical-top dome rather than the rounded R2 head. This mold has fewer removable features: only 2 accessories (the two outer leg panels). No dome panels, no sensorscope, no periscope; the dome antenna is not removable. The R5 silhouette is the visual differentiator that distinguishes it clearly from its two R2-unit packmates on a Yavin display.
The Dome Rotation Mechanism
On all three droids, rotating the dome 360° drives a mechanical linkage that physically extends or retracts the middle leg. Turn one way — middle leg deploys. Turn back — it retracts. This is the same mechanism as R2-D2 and works well on all three.
Pilot Notes
Wedge Antilles is one of only two pilots to survive both the Battle of Yavin and the Battle of Endor — a distinction that makes R2-A3 the survivor’s droid of the set. Red Leader Garven Dreis and R5-K6 made a direct trench run attempt before being shot down. Biggs Darklighter, Luke’s childhood friend from Tatooine, was killed moments before the Death Star’s destruction. Having all three on a Yavin diorama tells the full story of who made it back and who didn’t.
Secondary Market
Released as a single boxed 3-pack. Usually sold and searched as a complete set. When buying loose, verify the full accessory count: R2-A3 and R2-F2 should each have sensorscope, periscope, three dome panels, and two leg panels (9 total accessories across both); R5-K6 should have two leg panels. The dome panels are the smallest and most frequently missing pieces.
Verdict
The Astromech 3-Pack is the definitive Yavin hangar astromech set for Phase 3 Black Series collectors. The R5-K6 accessory count is sparse, but the three-droid combination and the Battle of Yavin narrative framing make this set more than the sum of its individual figures. Buy as a complete set.
