Captain Poe Dameron — Star Wars The Black Series #53

The Black Series Captain Poe Dameron — Red Line #53, 2017. Updated flight suit with captain's rank insignia, removable helmet and blaster pistol. The second of three Black Series Poe releases.

Overview

Red Line #53 is Captain Poe Dameron — the second Black Series Poe, updating the original TFA #07 with the captain’s rank insignia that distinguishes his TLJ and later TFA configurations. The fundamental formula is unchanged: orange and white Resistance flight suit, removable helmet, blaster pistol. The distinction is in the rank — the additional insignia on the flight suit that marks Poe’s promotion from Commander to Captain and his formal command authority over the Resistance starfighter corps.

The Oscar Isaac portrait is pre-Photo Real and approximates his specific features at the 2017 production standard. Three total Poe releases cover the Red Line versions and the 2022 Galaxy Collection TFA update. MSRP $19.99.

Rank Insignia as Display Differentiator

The Red Line #07 Poe (TFA X-Wing Pilot) and this Captain Poe (#53) are superficially similar — same flight suit, same colour scheme, same accessory configuration. The distinguishing element is the rank insignia: the Captain configuration has additional rank markers on the chest and shoulder that the #07 doesn’t carry. For collectors who want period-accurate TLJ Poe specifically, this is the correct version. For TFA-era Poe, #07 is the accurate configuration and the Galaxy Collection TFA version provides Photo Real portrait quality.

The removable helmet is present in both — enabling the helmet-on cockpit configuration and helmet-off ground-level display for either release.

The Last Jedi and Poe’s Leadership

TLJ develops Poe Dameron’s character in a specific direction that the TFA release didn’t anticipate: it shows him as someone whose tactical brilliance and individual heroism are actively counterproductive at the organisational level. He destroys the Dreadnought at enormous cost of life. He mutinies against Vice Admiral Holdo, whose plan he didn’t know about because he didn’t have clearance. He’s right about individual military engagements and repeatedly wrong about strategy and command structure.

This is the Captain Poe who leads the mutiny — the same confidence and capability that made him the best pilot in the Resistance now creating institutional problems because confidence doesn’t scale the way individual ability does. The Captain rank itself is part of that tension: he has the authority of rank but not the temperament for command as the film defines it.

Accessories

Removable X-Wing helmet and blaster pistol. Both fit naturally. 19 points via the standard Red Line scheme.

All Three Poe Releases

Poe Dameron (TFA #07) — TFA Commander, first release. Captain Poe Dameron (#53, this figure) — TLJ Captain with updated rank. Poe Dameron (TFA GC) (2022) — Galaxy Collection TFA with Photo Real Oscar Isaac portrait. The 2022 GC version is the current display recommendation for the TFA configuration; this Captain release is the specific TLJ rank-accurate version.

Secondary Market

Available at modest secondary market prices. No production variants documented.

Verdict

No production variants documented. The Captain Poe figure is widely available at or near original retail given the frequency of Poe Dameron production across the line. The 2022 Galaxy Collection TFA version commands somewhat higher prices due to the Photo Real Oscar Isaac portrait; this Captain version is priced on secondary market as a standard Red Line release rather than a premium.

Buy for the TLJ Captain rank-accurate Poe display, the TLJ Resistance command team alongside General Leia (#52), or Red Line sequence completion. The 2022 Galaxy Collection TFA Poe is recommended for the best available Poe portrait quality.

The Rank Insignia Detail

For collectors who want to verify which Poe they’re acquiring on secondary markets: the Captain rank insignia are visible on the chest and left shoulder of this #53 versus the Commander configuration of #07. The difference is subtle at shelf distance but clear in close examination. Both figures use the same fundamental orange-and-white flight suit silhouette; the rank markers and the specific helmet design distinguish them as different configurations.

The Captain rank is the TLJ-era accurate configuration. For TFA scene displays, the #07 or the 2022 Galaxy Collection version is the accurate choice. For TLJ Resistance command displays, this Captain version is correct.

Poe Dameron’s Evolving Role

TLJ marks the point in the trilogy where Poe begins transitioning from pure fighter pilot to organisational leader — a transition the film deliberately shows as painful. His instinct for decisive individual action (destroying the Dreadnought) and his difficulty with institutional patience (the Holdo mutiny) are the specific ways TLJ complicates the character. The Captain rank on this figure’s uniform is the institutional marker of exactly that tension: he has the rank, he struggles with what the rank requires.

For a complete TLJ Resistance command display: Captain Poe (#53) alongside General Leia (#52) and Finn First Order Disguise (#51) gives the three key Resistance figures in their TLJ configurations at consecutive Red Line numbers.

The Captain flight suit configuration is also noteworthy for what it communicates about the TLJ Resistance’s operational reality: Poe has a captain’s rank but the Resistance is outnumbered, outgunned, and running out of fuel in the film’s opening act. The rank insignia marks his authority; the film systematically shows the limits of that authority when individual heroism and institutional patience are in conflict. The figure captures the rank without the limitation — display context provides the rest.

The three consecutive TLJ Resistance command figures — Finn First Order Disguise (#51), General Leia (#52), Captain Poe Dameron (#53) — form the most complete single-wave display grouping in the Red Line sequence. Three figures, three TLJ configurations, three characters who each represent a different dimension of the Resistance: the former defector who chose it, the founder who built it, and the pilot who is learning what leading it actually requires. At consistent Red Line 2017 production quality, the trio is the TLJ Resistance leadership in plastic form.

Secondary market prices are modest. No variants documented. The Captain rank insignia is the definitive purchase check — if the insignia are visible on the chest and shoulder, it’s the Captain version rather than the Commander version of the #07 release.
