Overview
Darth Maul (Holocomm) is a Target exclusive released in early October 2024 at $34.99, part of the Black Series Holocomm Collection sub-line. This is the Sith apprentice of Darth Sidious from The Phantom Menace — the red and black face-tattooed Zabrak warrior with the iconic double-bladed lightsaber — updated for the Holocomm line with a repaint of the 2022 sculpt and the standard Holo Puck and Bounty Chip additions. Maul and Darth Vader are the two Sith Lords in the ten-figure Holocomm Collection.
The Holocomm Collection
The Holocomm Collection is a Phase 4 exclusive sub-line packaging premium Black Series figures with a light-up Holo Puck and Bounty Chip as exclusive additions. The Holo Puck illuminates on press; both pieces distinguish Holocomm releases from standard retail versions of the same characters. Ten figures were released across 2023–2024 via multiple exclusive channels; Darth Maul is the Target exclusive entry in the sub-line.
The Figure
18 joints — ball-jointed neck, lower neck, butterfly-jointed shoulders, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball-jointed upper body, barbell-jointed hip, swivel thighs, swivel-hinged knees, swivel-hinged ankles. The butterfly-jointed shoulders deserve specific mention — these joints allow the arms to swing forward across the chest, unlocking a much wider range of two-handed saber poses than standard ball-jointed shoulders allow. For a character famous for his acrobatic and spinning double-blade fighting style, the butterfly shoulders make a significant practical difference to what poses you can achieve.
Accessories
Two lightsaber hilts — each hilt is one half of Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber. The two connect together in the middle to form the complete double-bladed weapon — this is how it should be displayed for the iconic double-blade look. Each hilt can also be held separately if you prefer a single-blade display in each hand.
Two translucent blue blades — both blades are translucent blue rather than the red that Maul carries in canon. This is a Holocomm Collection design choice — the blue blades and the overall Holocomm aesthetic distinguish this release from standard Maul figures. The blades detach from the hilts cleanly.
Light-up Holo Puck — Holocomm Collection standard.
Bounty Chip — Holocomm Collection standard.
The 2022 Base Sculpt
A repaint of the 2022 Black Series Darth Maul sculpt, with the year imprint 2022 on the feet confirming the tooling origin. The 2022 sculpt is a strong version of Maul, with the butterfly shoulders already mentioned and accurate face tattooing detail. If you own the 2022 release, the Holocomm version offers the recoloured blue blades, the Holo Puck, and Bounty Chip as differentiators. For collectors who don’t yet have a Phase 4 Maul, this is the version with the most complete accessory set at this price.
The Blue Blades
Darth Maul canonically wields red lightsabers. The translucent blue blades on this Holocomm release are a deliberate design departure — a collector curiosity specific to this version. They give the figure a visually striking alternative display option and make the Holocomm Maul immediately identifiable against other Maul releases on a shelf. Whether you prefer blue or red, it’s worth knowing the blue blades are a Holocomm-specific choice before buying.
Darth Maul as a Character
Maul’s debut in The Phantom Menace remains one of the most visually impactful character introductions in the franchise — a silent, athletic warrior with a terrifying weapon that killed Qui-Gon Jinn and nearly killed Obi-Wan. His later appearances in The Clone Wars, Rebels, and Solo expanded the character significantly, revealing a survivalist driven by obsession and hatred. The double-bladed lightsaber remains his signature, and any Maul figure that nails the saber — two connectable hilts, removable blades — delivers the core of what makes this character worth displaying.
Target Exclusivity
Released through Target stores and Target.com in early October 2024. Standard Target exclusive availability across stores and online. Maul’s broad collector appeal means this sold through relatively quickly at launch.
Secondary Market
Target, October 2024. Verify both hilts, both blades, the Holo Puck, and the Bounty Chip. The individual blades and the small connecting hilts are the accessories most likely to be separated from a loose figure. Confirm the hilt connection mechanism still clicks together firmly.
Verdict
Darth Maul Holocomm is a strong Target entry — the butterfly shoulders enable the wide-stance saber poses the character demands, the two-hilt double-blade configuration is exactly right, and the Holo Puck completes the Holocomm sub-line credentials. The blue blades are the divisive element; they’re visually bold but non-canon. For Maul collectors and Sith shelf builders, this is worth owning.

Darth Maul’s Double-Blade Legacy
The double-bladed lightsaber — the saberstaff — was not new to Star Wars lore before The Phantom Menace, but Maul’s use of it in the Duel of the Fates remains its most iconic screen moment. The two-hilt-connecting design in this figure replicates the in-universe prop design accurately: two separate hilts that can be joined or separated. Hasbro has used several approaches to Maul’s saber across different phases — sometimes a single moulded double-blade, sometimes two separate hilts, sometimes only one hilt. The two separate connectable hilts is the most accurate and most display-flexible approach, and this figure uses it.
Blue Blades vs Red — A Collector Note
The canon saberstaff blades are red. The Holocomm version includes translucent blue blades as a deliberate Holocomm line-specific design choice. This isn’t an error — it’s intentional product differentiation that makes the Holocomm Maul immediately visually distinct from other releases. Collectors should decide whether they prefer the blue (which is striking and unusual) or the canonical red (available on other Maul releases in Phase 4) before purchasing.
Target as the Holocomm Exclusive Channel
Target holds the Maul Holocomm exclusively, making it the only Sith Lord in the sub-line with Target as its retail home. Target exclusives in the Black Series line tend to have good initial stock across stores and online, with the Maul name driving faster sell-through than some less prominent characters. The October 2024 release date places it late in the Holocomm programme alongside Vader — the two villain entries in the sub-line arriving in the same release window.
