Overview

The Black Series Jabba the Hutt is a 2014 Deluxe Blue Line release at $39.99 with wide retail availability — the first 6-inch scale Jabba the Hutt in the Black Series programme. The sculpt captures the Return of the Jedi Jabba with exceptional detail for the era. The defining engineering feature is a mouth mechanism linked to arm movement. The defining display problem is that Jabba was sold completely without a throne or any accessories, which makes him look naked and incomplete when displayed. An SDCC exclusive version with throne was released separately.

The Arm-Mouth Mechanism

When Jabba’s arms are moved up and down the mouth will open and close, revealing Jabba’s tongue. This is a specific interactive engineering detail — the arm articulation is functionally tied to the mouth rather than being independent. Raising and lowering the arms operates the mouth, making the 8-joint count more purposeful than it appears on paper. The mechanism is the set’s primary display interaction.

8 joints: swivel neck, 2 ball-jointed shoulders, 2 ball-jointed elbows, 2 ball-jointed wrists, mouth. Jabba’s tail is not movable — appropriate given the character’s canonical dragging locomotion rather than a poseable extremity.

The Sculpt Detail

The sculpt is beautifully done and captures the likeness of Jabba the Hutt from Return of the Jedi very well. Several specific details worth noting:

Tattoo — Jabba has his tattoo on the right forearm, a character-specific detail that Hasbro committed to in 6-inch scale.

Eyelashes — Hasbro gave him eyelashes, a detail only done once before on the 2004 Jabba the Hutt in the 3¾-inch SAGA Ultra Assortment line. A rare and specific character-accuracy detail.

Skin texture — the skin is nicely textured with rough skin on the top and suction cups towards the bottom, capturing the canonical Hutt species skin characteristics across different body regions.

The No-Accessories Problem

Unfortunately the figure was sold by itself without a throne or any other accessories, which makes it look naked and incomplete when on display. This is the most significant display limitation of the 2014 release. Jabba the Hutt’s canonical display position is reclined on his palace dais — a floor-level slug without contextual furniture reads as an incomplete display piece rather than a commanding crime lord. The sculpt quality is not in question; the absence of any environmental context is.

The SDCC exclusive release (id=3405) includes a throne. For collectors building a Jabba’s Palace display, that version is the more complete option for the figure to feel at home on a shelf.

Secondary Market

Wide retail, 2014, Phase 2 Blue Line packaging. No longer at retail. No accessories to verify — but check the SDCC version with throne if environment context matters for your display. The 2014 wide-retail version is Jabba alone.

Verdict

Jabba the Hutt (2014) is a beautifully sculpted large-scale character figure with a genuinely clever arm-to-mouth mechanism and exceptional skin-texture detail — the eyelashes and forearm tattoo show commitment to character accuracy that goes beyond the broad strokes. The arm mechanism, rough-to-suction-cup skin transition, and the sheer scale of the figure make it a compelling display piece for Jabba’s Palace builds.

The honest caveat is that selling Jabba without a throne was a missed opportunity that the figure’s own display presence exposes every day. If you’re going to display him, pair him with the SDCC throne version or build your own base — Jabba on the floor without context is the one thing this otherwise excellent sculpt can’t overcome on its own.
