Obi-Wan Kenobi (Kenner) — Star Wars The Black Series 50th Anniversary

The Black Series Obi-Wan Kenobi (Kenner) — 50th Anniversary, 2021. Amazon exclusive, $19.99. 19 joints. Kenner-inspired removable plastic robe and lightsaber with removable blue blade. Outstanding photo-real portrait. Lightsaber hilt hangs from belt hook. Repaint of 2016 figure.

Overview

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Kenner) is an Amazon exclusive in the Black Series 50th Anniversary sub-line, released in March 2021 at $19.99. This is a repaint of the 2016 Black Series Obi-Wan Kenobi with a different robe and an updated photo-real portrait — and by the standard account, the head sculpt is outstanding. The portrait looks amazing in person. It is the standout quality of the figure and the primary reason to own this release over the 2016 original.

The robe is Kenner-inspired plastic rather than soft-goods — the 1978 Kenner Ben Kenobi had a plastic vinyl robe, and this release tributes that aesthetic specifically. The colour tone across the entire outfit closely matches the original 1978 figure.

Articulation

19 joints. Ball-jointed neck, lower swivel neck (up and down movement), ball-jointed shoulders, ball-jointed elbows, ball-jointed wrists, ball-jointed upper body, ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, swivel joints above the knees, swivel joints below the knees, ball-jointed ankles.

The lower tunic is made from soft plastic, but it still limits leg articulation — the material gives slightly but restricts the range the hip and thigh joints can actually use. Upper body posing — neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and waist — is fully functional and gives good range for the standing and lightsaber-raised poses that define Obi-Wan’s display options.

The figure stands well without falling over.

Accessories

2 accessories. Kenner-inspired removable plastic robe and lightsaber hilt with removable blue blade.

The robe is the specific tribute choice here — plastic rather than soft-goods, referencing the vinyl material of the 1978 Kenner original. It removes from the figure cleanly. The lightsaber hilt hangs from a hook on Obi-Wan’s belt, giving a hip-stow display option that works well and looks correct for the character. The blue blade is removable from the hilt. Kenobi holds the saber well in both hands.

Two accessories at $19.99 is a lean package, but the Kenner plastic robe is a deliberate design choice rather than a cost reduction — soft-goods would have been cheaper to produce and more flexible, but the tribute specifically requires the plastic robe format.

The Head Sculpt

The photo-real portrait is described as outstanding and amazing in person — the specific superlatives used suggest this is meaningfully above average for the era and not just a routine update. The 2016 Obi-Wan’s portrait was adequate; this version is a significant improvement. For collectors who care about Obi-Wan portrait quality at this scale, the 2021 Kenner version is the benchmark in the Black Series for the A New Hope configuration.

The Kenner colour tone on the outfit — the specific warm off-white that the 1978 figure used — is described as quite accurate when compared directly to the original. This is a careful colour work rather than a rough approximation.

The Kenner Plastic Robe

The 1978 Kenner Ben Kenobi was released in two forms: a vinyl-robe variant and a later soft-cape variant. The vinyl-robed version is significantly rarer and more collectible. The 50th Anniversary tribute doesn’t replicate that rarity — it’s an Amazon exclusive available at launch — but the plastic robe specifically references the vinyl-robe aesthetic that makes the original Kenner figure notable.

At 6” Black Series scale, the plastic robe sits differently from soft-goods — it has more structure, drapes less naturally, and reads as a specific material rather than fabric approximation. That quality is the tribute’s point. The figure is communicating its reference explicitly through the accessory choice.

Obi-Wan’s A New Hope Role

The A New Hope Obi-Wan is the original trilogy’s origin point for the Force as more than a description — the hermit on Tatooine who demonstrates the lightsaber to Luke, who explains the Force as “an energy field created by all living things,” who is the first character in the franchise to be described as a Jedi Knight. Everything that follows in the original trilogy, including Luke’s entire arc, flows from Ben Kenobi agreeing to leave Tatooine.

The Kenner configuration — old Ben in his desert robes with the blue lightsaber — is the version of Obi-Wan that the 1978 figure established in millions of children’s imaginations. The 50th Anniversary figure acknowledges that specific moment: not young Obi-Wan, not the Clone Wars general, but the hermit who started everything by agreeing to accompany a farm boy to Alderaan.

The Amazon Kenner Trio

The three Amazon exclusives — Greedo, Jawa, and Obi-Wan Kenobi — are the 50th Anniversary sub-line’s Kenner tribute tier at $19.99 each. Of the three, Obi-Wan has the standout head sculpt and the most functionally useful accessory interaction (the plastic robe comes off cleanly, the lightsaber hangs from the belt). Greedo (Kenner) has the best posing range. The Jawa (Kenner) is the most constrained. Obi-Wan is the most balanced of the three as an overall figure.

Verdict

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Kenner) has the best photo-real portrait in the 50th Anniversary Amazon wave and one of the better Obi-Wan head sculpts in the Black Series for the A New Hope configuration. The Kenner-tribute plastic robe is the deliberate aesthetic choice that defines this release, the lightsaber-on-belt storage works cleanly, and the colour tribute to the 1978 figure is accurate. Lean on accessories at $19.99, but the portrait quality and the tribute precision make it worthwhile. Amazon exclusive, $19.99.
