Overview

The Range Trooper & D-0 Holiday Edition 2-Pack is the first of five Holiday Edition 2-packs released in November 2020 exclusively through Target. Target exclusive at $24.99. The Range Trooper is a rework and repaint of the 2018 Black Series Range Trooper (figure id=9095) in a Santa Claus colour scheme — red and white replacing the standard grey-and-fur configuration. D-0 accompanies as a Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer-styled companion. The 2020 Holiday Edition programme was the first Black Series Holiday Edition series in the 6” scale, drawing on a concept Hasbro had explored in the 3¾” line since 2002.

The Range Trooper Rework

For this release the original faux fur around the neck was replaced with a plastic version and the figure was painted in Santa Claus colours. This is a meaningful structural note — the 2018 source body used a soft-goods fabric fur piece around the neck as one of its distinctive material details. The Holiday Edition replaces it with a rigid plastic equivalent, which simplifies the figure’s material configuration while maintaining the silhouette. Red and white replace the canonical grey-and-brown colour scheme across the armour and cape.

19 joints. Ball-jointed top neck, swivel lower neck, ball-jointed shoulders, elbows, and wrists, ball-jointed upper body, ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, ball-jointed knees, swivel ankles, plus swivel armour plates between the shoes and shins. The ankle-and-shin-plate double-joint is a distinctive articulation detail on the Range Trooper source body — the armour plate can move independently of the ankle, supporting the canonical heavy-winter-terrain-boot aesthetic. The figure stands well on display without falling over. No head underneath the helmet. No removable parts.

The Translucent Blade Weapon

Instead of a blaster, the Range Trooper comes with a translucent blade weapon — originally included with the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con exclusive version of the Sith Trooper. The blade weapon fits into both hands. This is the Holiday Edition’s most structurally unusual accessory choice — the translucent Sith Trooper blade is a visually distinctive piece, but its connection to either a Range Trooper or a Santa Claus concept isn’t obvious.

The reviewer makes this point plainly: instead of including a blade weapon, a sack of toys hanging over the shoulder would have been more appropriate. It’s a fair critique. The weapon choice feels like a repurposed accessory from a different figure’s release rather than a Holiday Edition-specific prop.

The Character Choice Critique

The Holiday Edition concept is fun, and it has a long history in the 3¾” line going back to 2002. For this particular release, though, a Range Trooper feels like an odd choice for the Santa Claus role — how about Palpatine or Vader? The Range Trooper is a relatively obscure Solo: A Star Wars Story Imperial character whose visual identity (heavy cold-weather armour and fur) has an obvious practical connection to winter aesthetics, but whose character recognition is considerably lower than Imperial icons like Vader or Palpatine. The Holiday Edition concept works best when the character either has strong recognition or a visual fit with the seasonal theme. The Range Trooper has the visual fit but not the recognition.

D-0 as Rudolph

D-0 accompanies the Range Trooper as a Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer-styled companion — the small spherical droid from The Rise of Skywalker reimagined in seasonal styling. D-0’s round body and rolling locomotion map naturally to a reindeer-companion concept, and the Rudolph styling is one of the more charming character-concept fits in the 2020 Holiday Edition series.

The 2020 Holiday Edition 5-Pack Programme

This is Pack #1 of 5 in the 2020 Holiday Edition series, all released through Target in November 2020. The five 2-packs span multiple Imperial and other character classes, each paired with a Holiday-styled companion figure. As the first Holiday Edition Black Series 6” programme, the 2020 series established the template for subsequent Holiday Edition releases.

Secondary Market

Target exclusive 2-pack in Holiday Edition packaging, November 2020. Available on the secondary market. Verify the translucent blade weapon is present — it’s the only accessory for the Range Trooper. D-0 has no separate accessories.

Verdict

The Range Trooper & D-0 Holiday Edition 2-Pack is a lighthearted seasonal novelty with a couple of specific execution critiques — the Santa Claus colour scheme on the Range Trooper’s cold-weather armour has natural visual logic, the D-0 Rudolph pairing is charming, and the shin-plate ankle articulation is a distinctive engineering detail from the source body. The translucent blade weapon is the wrong accessory for a Santa character (a sack of toys would have been far more appropriate), and the Range Trooper is a lower-recognition character choice when more iconic figures like Vader or Palpatine would have had stronger seasonal-novelty appeal.

As the first Holiday Edition Black Series 6” release, this is primarily of interest to Holiday Edition completists, Range Trooper character collectors, or collectors who appreciate the seasonal novelty concept regardless of character selection.

The Imperial cold-weather specialist in Santa Claus colours, paired with a Rudolph droid. The figure with the plastic fur replacement, the repurposed Sith Trooper blade weapon, and the shin-plate ankle articulation. Target exclusive, November 2020, Holiday Edition 2-Pack #1 of 5.
