Star Wars Black Series Cantina Confrontation

The Mos Eisley Cantina confrontation from A New Hope — Ponda Baba and Doctor Evazan picking the wrong fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Black Series figures for this scene, with full context on the cantina sequence, its place in the Original Trilogy, and how it connects to Rogue One.

The Mos Eisley Cantina is the moment A New Hope introduces the galaxy beyond the conflict — the criminal underworld where dangerous people drink together and deals get made and arguments end badly. The cantina confrontation is its sharpest expression: two thugs pick a fight with the wrong person, a Jedi Master removes an arm, and the scene is over in seconds. What it leaves behind is one of the most specific and collectible moments in the Original Trilogy.

The Scene in Star Wars

Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi arrive at the Mos Eisley Cantina looking for a pilot willing to take them off-planet. The cantina is exactly what that mission requires — a place where people who fly illegal cargo gather, where questions aren’t asked, where Imperial attention doesn’t reach.

Ponda Baba and Doctor Evazan find Luke at the bar. Ponda — an Aqualish with a short temper — shoves him. Evazan escalates, citing a death sentence on twelve systems. Obi-Wan draws his lightsaber and ends it.

The scene is structurally small but does significant work. It establishes that the cantina is genuinely dangerous rather than merely atmospheric. It demonstrates Obi-Wan’s capability before the Death Star duel requires him to hold back. It gives Luke a moment of vulnerability that resets his confidence after Tatooine. And it does all of this in under a minute, then moves on.

What makes Ponda Baba and Doctor Evazan endure as collectors’ figures is exactly that brevity. They’re the cantina’s most specific inhabitants — distinctive enough in design to be immediately recognisable, brief enough in appearance that the imagination fills in the rest. Evazan’s scarred face and imperial surgeon past, Ponda Baba’s walrus tusks and evident willingness to start trouble — both designs communicate character without dialogue.

The detail that elevates them further: both appear in Rogue One, on Jedha, in the street scenes before the Imperial crackdown. Whatever they were doing there, they were doing it before A New Hope as well. That continuity — Evazan and Ponda Baba drifting through the galaxy’s edges, turning up in exactly the kind of place where things are about to go badly wrong — is a piece of world-building that rewards paying attention.

The Galaxy Collection ANH Wave

The 2021 Galaxy Collection A New Hope wave gave the cantina confrontation its definitive Black Series coverage. Ponda Baba and Doctor Evazan were produced together in the same wave with Photo Real face printing — the first time either character received serious Black Series treatment after years of the Orange Wave Greedo being the only cantina figure in the line.

The production quality gap between the 2013 Orange Wave Greedo and the 2021 ANH releases reflects twelve years of improvement in the line. For the cantina confrontation specifically, the 2021 figures are the display — Ponda Baba and Evazan at modern Black Series quality, finally representing the scene properly.

Greedo and the Cantina

Greedo is tagged to this scene reflecting his cantina presence, but his specific moment — the booth confrontation with Han Solo — is a separate incident. He’s a cantina regular working Jabba’s contracts, not a participant in the Evazan confrontation.

For display purposes he sits naturally with the cantina figures or the broader Mos Eisley display. The Orange Wave figure from 2013 is the only Black Series Greedo — older production, but alien characters carry older production eras better than human faces do.

Cantina Confrontation and Mos Eisley

This scene sits within the broader Mos Eisley display — the spaceport, the cantina crowd, Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes. The confrontation is the dramatic incident; Mos Eisley is the environment around it. Both scenes work together for a complete cantina display, or independently depending on what you’re building toward.
