Overview

Chewbacca’s absence from the Orange Wave was one of the most discussed gaps in the Black Series’ first year. When he arrived at Blue Wave #04 in 2014, the delay made sense: Hasbro had invested in the fur sculpting in a way that a rushed launch figure wouldn’t have allowed. The multi-shaded fur application, the correctly-oversized proportions placing him a head and a half above standard figures, and the individually-moulded harness cables over the bandolier are all details that reward the time taken.

Wookiee figures hold a structural advantage in the Black Series across production eras. Photo Real face printing technology transformed human character portraits in 2019 and created a visible quality divide between pre- and post-2019 releases. For Chewbacca, that divide simply doesn’t apply — his quality benchmark is fur texture and colour accuracy, not facial likeness. This figure competes with the 2025 Galaxy Collection Chewbacca in a way that the Blue Wave Obi-Wan Kenobi or Luke Skywalker cannot compete with their Photo Real successors. MSRP $19.99.

The Character and Scene Context

Chewbacca is a Wookiee warrior approximately 200 years old at the time of A New Hope — a Clone Wars veteran who fought alongside Yoda at the Battle of Kashyyyk during Order 66, and who spent the following years as Han Solo’s co-pilot and closest companion. The Wookiee life-debt tradition gives their partnership narrative structure, but the relationship is clearly mutual: Han and Chewie operate as genuine partners across the original trilogy rather than as owner and bonded servant.

The bowcaster is the specific weapon that defines Chewbacca’s combat role. The Wookiee bowcaster — a mag-accelerated quarrel launcher that fires enveloped plasma bolts — fires with enough force to throw armoured Stormtroopers backwards and is significantly more powerful than standard blaster technology. In The Force Awakens, Han Solo’s single shot from Chewbacca’s bowcaster demonstrated its power differential against the DL-44 he normally carries. It is not a weapon any human character uses routinely.

Accessories

Four accessories: a three-piece Wookiee bowcaster (body, scope, and forward attachment) and a removable bandolier with satchel.

The bowcaster assembles from three pieces. The scope clips to the top of the body; the forward attachment connects to the barrel end. In static display the assembly holds without issue. The scope can be positioned at a slight upward angle from horizontal to match the specific on-screen grip geometry visible in the films — Chewbacca holds the weapon with the barrel slightly elevated, not level. This minor adjustment improves display accuracy noticeably.

The bandolier unclips from the figure and removes entirely. With it removed, the figure displays in a bare-fur configuration. In practice virtually all Chewbacca displays use the bandolier — it’s too visually definitive to the character to omit — but the option exists. The satchel hangs from the bandolier’s front and is not separately removable.

Sculpt and Articulation

The fur sculpt uses multiple shades of brown and tan across the body, with darker colouring at the head and shoulders transitioning to lighter tones in the lower body and inner arms. The parting and layering of individual fur textures, the lighter cream colouring on the chest and inner arms, and the specific shade variation around the muzzle and eyes are all accurate to the reference material. At shelf display distance this reads as actual fur rather than painted plastic.

The figure stands approximately one and a half to two head-heights above standard 6-inch figures, which is correct for Wookiee scale relative to humans in the films.

Articulation runs to 17 points: ball-jointed neck, ball-jointed shoulders, ball-jointed elbows, ball-jointed wrists, swivel upper torso, ball-jointed waist, swivel hips, swivel thighs, ball-jointed knees, ball-jointed ankles. The swivel hip joints rather than ball joints limit wide-stance poses — a constraint that later Chewbacca releases improved on. For standard standing and two-handed-weapon display poses the articulation is sufficient.

The most current versions: Chewbacca (ANH 2025) from the Galaxy Collection A New Hope sub-line for the definitive ANH configuration. Chewbacca (ESB) from the 40th Anniversary ESB wave for the Bespin context in Kenner cardback packaging. Chewbacca (ROTJ) from the Galaxy Collection ROTJ sub-line. An Archive Collection reissue (2022) brought the figure back to standard retail after the Galaxy Collection era began.

The Blue Wave original was also repackaged as a 40th Anniversary Chewbacca in 2017 — same figure, updated packaging.

Display Recommendations

Chewbacca’s cross-era display compatibility is better than most Blue Wave figures. The fur quality gap between this and current production is smaller than the face-printing gap that affects human characters, which means this figure integrates reasonably with a mixed-era display. Pair alongside Galaxy Collection Han Solo (2025) without the quality mismatch being immediately apparent.

The bowcaster full assembly with slight scope elevation is the display configuration that most accurately references the on-screen weapon. For the Millennium Falcon crew display — Han, Chewie, Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2 — Chewbacca’s position as the physically dominant character means his individual quality matters more than any other member of the group.

Verdict

The Galaxy Collection ANH Chewbacca (2025) is the current display recommendation.

Buy the Blue Wave #04 for: the first-ever 6-inch Black Series Chewbacca with its original release provenance; completing the Blue Wave numbered sequence; or as a budget-viable alternative where the fur quality holds up better across eras than any human character equivalent would.

Secondary Market

The Blue Wave Chewbacca is available at or near original retail on secondary markets. The 2022 Archive Collection P4 reissue brought the figure back to standard retail pricing, and the 2025 Galaxy Collection ANH version is the current primary market option. Secondary demand for the Blue Wave version is primarily Blue Wave completionist. Carded examples in good condition carry a modest premium. No significant production variants have been documented.
