Darth Sidious (Palpatine) — Star Wars The Black Series #ROTS 01

The Black Series Darth Sidious — Phase 4 ROTS Collection #01, 2024. Emperor Palpatine in ROTS Sith configuration with lightsaber and Force lightning. Photo Real portrait. Collector guide.

Overview

Phase 4 ROTS Collection #01 is Darth Sidious — Sheev Palpatine, Senator, Chancellor, Emperor, and the prequel trilogy’s true primary antagonist: the Sith Lord who engineered the Clone Wars from both sides, who manipulated the Republic into dissolving itself, who turned Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader, and who constructed the Empire from the wreckage of the Republic with the Senate’s own applause. The ROTS configuration covers the hooded Sith Lord in his Chancellor’s-office confrontation mode — the specific look of the moment the mask comes off.

The Character

Palpatine’s specific achievement across the prequel trilogy is the most complete political villainy in the franchise — he manipulates every faction simultaneously, he creates the crisis that requires his emergency powers, he architects the Jedi purge using an army the Jedi didn’t know he controlled, and he does all of it while being the kindly mentor figure to the one person whose fall makes everything possible. The ROTS moment — “I am the Senate,” “Do it,” the Force lightning, the transformation from Chancellor to Emperor — is the payoff of a plan that has been running since before The Phantom Menace.

The Force lightning accessory is the figure’s most display-significant element — the physical representation of the most iconic Palpatine combat action in the franchise.

Force Lightning and Lightsaber

The Force lightning accessory is a translucent energy effect piece that attaches to the figure’s outstretched hand — the specific visual of Palpatine’s primary weapon against the Jedi. The lightsaber is his backup — rarely used in the films, but deployed in the Mace Windu confrontation at ROTS’s critical hinge point. Both accessories represent the two combat modes of the most dangerous Sith in the franchise.

Phase 4 vs Blue Wave Palpatine

The Blue Wave (P2-11) covered Emperor Palpatine in his ANH/ROTJ seated Emperor configuration at the 2015 production standard. The ROTS #01 covers Darth Sidious in the ROTS active-Sith configuration — standing, robed, Force lightning deployed — at 2024 Photo Real production quality. The two figures represent the character at different points in his arc: the triumphant Emperor of the original trilogy (P2-11) and the scheming Chancellor about to destroy the Republic (P4-ROTS-01).

The ROTS Collection Opens on the Villain

The ROTS Collection’s choice to open at #01 with Palpatine rather than Anakin, Obi-Wan, or a clone trooper communicates the collection’s thematic orientation. ROTS is Palpatine’s film — everything that happens in it is the execution of his plan. Starting the collection with him is starting with the architect.

Verdict

The definitive Phase 4 ROTS Palpatine. Buy for the Sith Lord display, the Force lightning accessory, or ROTS Collection completion.

The ROTS Palpatine Configuration

The ROTS Palpatine is the most combat-ready of his configurations — the Sith Lord revealed rather than the Chancellor concealed. Where the Blue Wave Palpatine (P2-11) covers the triumphant Emperor seated on his throne in the original trilogy, the ROTS #01 covers the moment the mask comes off: the confrontation with Mace Windu, the Force lightning that disfigures his face, the Emperor’s Throne Speech to the Senate.

The Force lightning accessory is the display argument for this figure over the Blue Wave version. Palpatine’s most iconic action sequence in the franchise — the Chamber confrontation, the Senate fight with Yoda, the face disfiguration from reflected lightning — all centre on the Force lightning. The Blue Wave figure has no such accessory; this Phase 4 version does.

Palpatine’s Manipulation of Anakin

The specific quality of Palpatine’s ROTS manipulation of Anakin is its patience — he has been cultivating the relationship since TPM, when Anakin was nine years old, waiting for the specific moment of vulnerability that ROTS provides. Padmé’s pregnancy, the visions of her death, the promise of a dark side power that can prevent death: Palpatine deploys the one weakness Anakin has that the Jedi Order’s training was never designed to address.

The figure at #ROTS 01 represents the architect of that manipulation at the moment it completes. Displayed alongside Anakin (#ROTS 05), the two figures create the confrontation and the corruption in the same display space.

The ROTS Collection’s Opening Statement

The ROTS Collection starting with Palpatine rather than Anakin or Obi-Wan is the collection’s most important structural decision. ROTS is a tragedy — and like all tragedies, it’s most clearly understood from the villain’s perspective. Palpatine wins in ROTS. The Jedi lose. Anakin falls. The Republic dies. Starting with the man who wanted all of that to happen is starting with the correct protagonist.

Palpatine at #ROTS 01 is the only figure in the ROTS Collection with Force lightning — and across Phase 4, Force lightning is among the most collector-requested accessories for Sith-tier characters. The translucent energy effect communicates the character’s combat style immediately and requires no additional display context.

The ROTS Collection at five figures covers three distinct ROTS narrative threads: the Sith architect (#01), the Order 66 executors (#02-#03), and the Jedi who survive and will have to face each other (#04-#05). Five figures, three threads, one film’s complete principal tragedy.

No production variants documented. Standard retail. Both accessories — Force lightning and lightsaber — should be verified on secondary market purchases. The Force lightning piece is the smaller and more easily separated of the two.

Palpatine at #ROTS 01 also creates one of the Phase 4 prequel collections’ most compelling cross-collection display arguments: the complete Palpatine plan in three figures. TPM Anakin (#TPM 02) is the Sith Lord’s chosen weapon, acquired at age nine. AOTC Padawan (#110) is the weapon being trained. ROTS Sidious (#ROTS 01) is the Sith who finally deploys it. Three figures from three collections, spanning the entire prequel trilogy, one coherent manipulation.
