Overview
DJ R3X (Galaxy’s Edge) is a Target exclusive released August 30th 2020 at $24.99 — a single-boxed re-release of DJ R3X from the Disney Parks exclusive Droid Depot 4-pack (id=20408). No accessories are included. 21 joints — making this one of the more articulated droids in the Black Series programme, with articulation distributed across the body in ways unique to the character’s design. Also found at Tatooine Traders at Walt Disney World.
The Articulation
Each joint serves the droid’s distinctive physical character:
Swivel headphones — permanently attached but swing back and forth on pivot points.
Extendable neck — the lower neck joint not only allows rotation but enables the head to be pushed upward out of the body, making the droid taller. The head can be fully extended for a gangly display or retracted for a compact look.
Three 360° rotating body rings — the three middle rings of the body each rotate independently a full 360°. Combined, they give R3X an enormous range of body-twist positions.
Multi-joint arms — each arm has articulation at the shoulder, elbow, and forearm/wrist, resulting in a wide variety of arm poses. The fingers and claw also have individual swivel points.
The Character History
DJ R3X began life as Captain REX, the pilot droid of the Starspeeder 3000 at Disney’s Star Tours attraction. He was later reprogrammed and reassigned to Oga’s Cantina inside Galaxy’s Edge, where he now DJs. The dirty and used appearance on the figure reflects his long history.
Packaging Variation
Available with either the First Order symbol or the Resistance symbol on the packaging exterior. The figure is identical in both versions.
Secondary Market
Target, August 2020. No accessories. The only loose purchase question is condition of the body rings and arm joints.
Verdict
DJ R3X is a highly poseable droid with a genuinely unique articulation system — the extendable neck and three independent body rings make him one of the most expressive display pieces in the programme. No accessories, but the figure itself carries the display value through sheer posing variety.
