The Black Series Galaxy's Edge Droid Depot 4-Pack — Disney exclusive, May 31 2019 (Galaxy's Edge opening day). $69.99. C-3PO: new movie-accurate eyes, first elbow articulation. R2-D2: unique wash paint. BB-8: dirtier than prior releases, rolls to the side. DJ R3X: set highlight — 21 joints including extendable neck and 3 rotating body rings, formerly Captain REX from Star Tours.
Overview
The Galaxy’s Edge Droid Depot 4-Pack was released on May 31st 2019 — the opening day of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland — as a Disney park exclusive at $69.99. Four droids in a single package themed around the Droid Depot attraction inside the park. C-3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8 are known characters receiving Galaxy’s Edge-specific paint treatments; DJ R3X is the set’s standout and the character most closely tied to the park itself. The stories at Galaxy’s Edge are set between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
C-3PO
The most significant C-3PO upgrade in the Black Series 6” programme. 21 joints — the same arm configuration first introduced on the 4-LOM figure, now applied to C-3PO for the first time, giving the protocol droid movable forearms plus elbow articulation not seen in any prior Black Series C-3PO. The knee-side tools are movable 360°.
Two specific improvements over all prior Black Series C-3PO releases: entirely new eyes that are more movie accurate, and the elbow articulation. Both had been absent from every previous 6” C-3PO and are the reason this version became the source body for the Cloud City C-3PO 2019.
No accessories, no openable panels. The gold paint reflects light but is not shiny enough to be fully movie accurate — the same known limitation across all Black Series C-3PO releases, unresolved here. Correct height. Well sculpted.
R2-D2
The same 2013 R2-D2 tooling used four times now in the Black Series 6” line, this time with a unique wash that makes this release visually distinct from the 2013, 2017, and 2018 versions. 6 joints. Five removable panels (3 dome + 2 leg). No plug-in accessories included despite the panel holes accepting them. Dome rotation moves middle leg with clicking sound. Two pullout front arms. Dual foot wheels for stability. Undersized vs 6” scale — programme-wide issue.
BB-8
Repaint of the 2015 BB-8 (id=3457). 2 joints — 360° rotating head plus an internal ball joint allowing directional movement. Dirtier paint than all previous Black Series BB-8 releases — the one exclusive differentiator. No accessories. BB-8 is difficult to display: he likes to roll off to the side. No flat base, no peg holes. Antennas not removable.
DJ R3X — The Set’s Highlight
DJ R3X is the most articulated and interesting figure in the 4-pack. The character has history: originally Captain REX, the pilot droid from Disney’s Star Tours attraction, who has since reinvented himself as the cantina DJ at Galaxy’s Edge. 21 joints across a completely unique articulation scheme.
The neck can be extended upward out of the body to make the droid taller — a display configuration option not found on any other Black Series figure. The three rings in the middle of the body each rotate independently 360°. The arms are built on a complex three-arm system with articulation at the shoulder, elbow, and forearm/wrist/finger level, resulting in a huge range of possible DJ pose configurations. The swivelling headphones complete the look.
No accessories and none needed — the figure generates display variety through its articulation alone. Dirty and used paint application. No balance issues. Hasbro did a fantastic job capturing the likeness of this droid and gave it a ton of movable parts with a great paint application. DJ R3X was re-released at Target in 2020 as a single-card figure (id=25794).
The Galaxy’s Edge Context
This is the first Black Series set tied directly to a Disney park attraction rather than to a film or television series. The set was available at the Galaxy’s Edge park from opening day, making it one of the most location-exclusive releases in the programme — originally requiring a visit to Disneyland to acquire. The 4-pack has since entered the secondary market.
Secondary Market
Disney exclusive, May 2019. No individual figure accessories to check beyond R2-D2’s five removable panels (3 dome + 2 leg).
Verdict
Galaxy’s Edge Droid Depot 4-Pack earns its place primarily through two figures: C-3PO with its long-overdue new eyes and elbow articulation is the best 6” C-3PO in the programme, and DJ R3X is a genuinely exceptional figure with unique engineering that stands apart from any other Black Series release. R2-D2 provides a uniquely washed variant of the familiar tooling. BB-8’s rolling display problem is the honest practical note. At $69.99 for four droids including two programme-defining releases, the set delivers.
