Overview

Sergeant Kreel (Marvel: Star Wars) is a Fan Channel exclusive in the Black Series 50th Anniversary sub-line, released in early July 2022 at $27.99. The figure is based on Sergeant Kreel’s appearances across multiple Marvel Star Wars comic series — the leader of SCAR Squadron (Task Force 99), an elite Stormtrooper unit operating under direct Darth Vader command, who is also a covert Force-sensitive agent capable of wielding a lightsaber.

The concept is immediately compelling: a Stormtrooper with a green lightsaber. It carries what the data aptly describes as a McQuarrie-esque feeling — the early concept art for Star Wars featured exactly this kind of figure, Stormtroopers as something more dangerous and individualised than the faceless infantry the films ultimately depicted. The figure delivers on the concept.

Articulation

18 joints. Barbell-jointed neck, ball-jointed lower neck, butterfly-jointed shoulders, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball-jointed upper body, barbell-jointed hip, swivel thighs, swivel-hinged knees, rocker ankles.

The butterfly shoulders are the key feature for combat poses — they give Kreel the forward arm sweep needed for two-handed lightsaber stances, which is exactly what you want from a figure who wields one. The rocker ankles provide stable ground contact in wide dynamic stances. The figure stands well even in active poses.

Accessories

3 accessories. Green lightsaber with removable green blade, blaster, removable shoulder pauldron.

The lightsaber hilt fits the belt hook for stowed display. The blade detaches cleanly. Kreel holds the blaster tightly in both hands and it fits well into the holster. The shoulder pauldron is the distinctive removable element — remove the helmet first, then lift the pauldron free. This is the one configuration choice the figure offers: full SCAR Commander look with pauldron, or stripped-down Stormtrooper look without it.

The jetpack is glued to the back armour and is not removable. The pouches on the left upper arm and left thigh are sculpted on and not removable. The blue guard on the left forearm might technically come off, but the strap holding it is fragile enough that attempting removal is not recommended.

There is no head under the helmet — Hasbro used the same approach as the standard Stormtrooper: hollow helmet, no face sculpt inside.

The Stormtrooper Lightsaber

There is something genuinely striking about a Stormtrooper holding a lightsaber in Black Series scale. The visual tension between the anonymous, mass-produced armour and the individual, Force-connection weapon creates a character identity immediately — this is not a standard trooper, this is someone operating at a different level of capability while maintaining the Imperial aesthetic.

The glossy white Stormtrooper armour paint is clean and correct. The SCAR Squadron additions — the different belt, the arm and leg pouches, the shoulder pauldron — are all well-executed modifications that distinguish Kreel from a generic Stormtrooper without abandoning the visual identity.

Sergeant Kreel and SCAR Squadron

Sergeant Kreel began as Agent 5241, an undercover Imperial intelligence operative who worked with the criminal cartel Gamemaster, before his cover was blown by Luke Skywalker. His background makes him unusual among Imperial Stormtroopers: trained in infiltration, hand-to-hand combat, and lightsaber use — the last being extremely rare outside the Sith and Jedi Orders.

SCAR Squadron under his command functions as a special operations unit capable of missions standard Stormtroopers can’t execute. They’re elite by Imperial standards in a way the films never showed — the comics’ version of what the best Imperial soldiers actually look like.

His appearances across Jason Aaron’s Star Wars run are among the better villain character work in the Marvel era. He’s a credible physical threat to Luke, he has a clear philosophy about duty and capability, and his lightsaber makes every confrontation feel appropriately high-stakes. The 50th Anniversary figure is his first Black Series representation and the only one as of release.

Verdict

Sergeant Kreel (Marvel: Star Wars) delivers the concept cleanly — a Stormtrooper with a green lightsaber, butterfly shoulders for proper combat poses, and the SCAR Squadron kit that distinguishes him without abandoning the Imperial aesthetic. The removable pauldron is a good configuration option. The glued jetpack and the no-head-under-helmet are noted constraints. If you enjoyed the Jason Aaron Star Wars comics run, this is the figure those arcs deserved. Fan Channel exclusive, $27.99.
