The "unlucky" astromech with the bad motivator rolled into The Vintage Collection in 2011 as part of Wave 5. Representing the fateful droid from the Owen Lars homestead scene in A New Hope, R5-D4 was a treat for Original Trilogy purists. This release finally provided a super-articulated, modern 3.75-inch version of the red-and-white droid, capturing the utilitarian aesthetic of the moisture-farming life on Tatooine while offering the mechanical functionality that previous, more static versions lacked.

Technical Details & Sculpt

  • Design & Droid Silhouette: The sculpt features the characteristic "trapezoidal" head and cylindrical body of the R5-series astromech. The proportions are significantly improved over the 1978 original, providing a more robust and screen-accurate profile that fits perfectly alongside modern R2 units.
  • Deco & Weathering: The 2011 release is defined by its heavy Tatooine grime. The paint application features realistic red accents over a white base, but the standout feature is the weathering wash. It effectively simulates years of exposure to the abrasive sands of the Jundland Wastes, with dark residue collected in the panel lines and grease marks near the motivator housing.
  • Articulation: Featuring premium astromech articulation, including a rotating dome and a retractable third leg. The "rocker" ankles and rolling wheels on the feet allow R5 to maintain a steady, angled posture on the uneven desert terrain of a Jawa Sandcrawler scene.
  • Display Utility: This is the mandatory "droid" for any Droid Auction or Lars Homestead diorama. He is best positioned directly between Uncle Owen and R2-D2 (VC25), just moments before his legendary malfunction.

Accessories & Equipment

R5-D4 comes prepared for a brief moment of hope followed by mechanical failure. A standout feature of the 2011 release is the "pop-up" bad motivator; by rotating the dome, collectors can activate the damaged motivator unit that emerges from the top of the droid's head. The figure also includes two hidden tool arms that fold out from the front panels, allowing him to interact with other machinery or be "serviced" by a Jawa. Additionally, he features a removable "restraining bolt" that can be pegged into his chassis to reflect his status as a prisoner of the Jawas.
