Clone Trooper Captain — Star Wars The Black Series #13
The Black Series Clone Trooper Captain — Blue Wave #13, 2015. Phase I armour with red Captain rank markings, blaster and blaster rifle. Completes the Blue Wave Phase I rank trio alongside the Sergeant. Army builder guide.
Overview
Blue Wave #13 is the Clone Trooper Captain — Phase I armour repainted with the red markings that identify Captain rank, the officer tier above the Blue Wave Sergeant (P2-07) and below Commander. This is the third Phase I Clone Trooper body Hasbro produced in the Blue Wave sequence: standard white from the Orange Wave, green Sergeant in Blue Wave #07, red Captain here. Together they provide the three-tier Phase I rank hierarchy for squad displays — standard Trooper, NCO, officer.
The figure is a direct repaint of the same base body as the Sergeant: same articulation, same accessories, same engineering, red paint instead of green on the helmet dividers, chest trim, pauldrons, and lower leg panels. The red Captain markings are the most prominent rank colour in the Phase I system — they appear frequently in the Geonosis Arena sequences and throughout The Clone Wars animated series on the named Captain-rank characters like CC-2224 “Cody” (though Cody’s markings are the specific 212th Battalion orange rather than the generic Captain red of this figure). MSRP $19.99. ASIN B00RI3H0A0.
Clone Trooper Rank Colour System
Understanding the Phase I rank colour system is essential for accurate squad displays. The Captain rank (red) sits one step above Sergeant (green) and one below Commander (yellow):
Standard Trooper: White, no marking — the baseline army builder. Sergeant: Green — small unit leader. Blue Wave P2-07. Lieutenant: Blue — platoon-level officer. Captain: Red — company commander. This figure. Commander: Yellow — battalion level and above.
The red Captain markings on this figure represent the generic Captain rank rather than any specific named character. Named clone characters like Captain Rex (CC-7567) carry the specific 501st Legion blue markings rather than generic Captain red. The value of this figure is as a rank-differentiated officer in a multi-rank Phase I squad display rather than as a representation of a specific Clone Wars character.
Accessories
Two accessories: a DC-15S blaster carbine and a DC-15A blaster rifle, both with grey paint highlights.
Both weapons fit well in either hand. The DC-15A blaster rifle is the more visually dominant weapon for display; the DC-15S carbine works better for a secondary-weapon or at-ease configuration. Consistent with the Sergeant release, the weapons give multiple-copy army builder displays weapon variety without requiring additional accessories.
Sculpt and Articulation
The Phase I Clone Trooper sculpt accurately renders the Attack of the Clones-era armour design: the rounder helmet dome, the split visor, the less angular chest armour of the pre-Phase II design. The red rank markings are cleanly applied. The belt is permanently attached and there is no head beneath the helmet.
Articulation covers 22 points: ball-jointed neck, ball-jointed shoulders, swivel biceps, dual elbow swivels, ball-jointed wrists, ball-jointed waist, ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, above and below knee swivels, ball-jointed ankles. The shoulder armour limits full arm elevation consistent with all Clone Trooper variants.
Army Building with the Captain
The Clone Trooper Captain earns its display purpose as the command element in a multi-rank Phase I squad. One Captain positioned at the head of a formation — one Sergeant providing the flanking NCO, standard white Troopers in the body of the squad — creates the three-tier visual hierarchy that makes a clone army display read as an actual military unit rather than a collection of identical figures.
For a Geonosis Arena display with the full Phase I rank structure: Captain as field commander, Sergeant as NCO, standard white Troopers from the Galaxy Collection AOTC sub-line as the rank-and-file. No Galaxy Collection Phase I Captain update exists — this Blue Wave version remains the only Black Series Captain rank in Phase I armour.
The combined Blue Wave Sergeant (P2-07) and Captain (P2-13) give collectors the NCO-to-officer pair needed for a ranked Phase I display that the standard white army builder figures alone can’t achieve.
Comparison to Named Clone Commanders
Collectors sometimes conflate the generic Captain rank figure with named clone captain characters like CC-7567 Rex (whose figure is the Clone Captain Rex from the Red Line) or CC-2224 Cody (the Clone Commander Cody P2-14 from this wave). The distinction matters for display accuracy: Rex carries 501st Legion blue markings; Cody carries 212th Battalion orange markings; this Captain figure carries generic Captain red that doesn’t identify a specific named individual. Use this figure as an anonymous officer in a squad display; use Rex or Cody when you specifically want named characters.
Secondary Market
The Blue Wave Clone Trooper Captain is available at or below original retail on secondary markets. Army builders who want multiple rank-differentiated copies find loose examples readily available. No significant variants documented.
Verdict
The Galaxy Collection AOTC Phase I Clone Trooper is the standard white army builder recommendation.
For collectors who want the complete Phase I rank structure at the highest available quality: the Blue Wave Sergeant and Captain are paired purchases. The standard white Troopers from the Galaxy Collection provide the modern army-builder bodies; the Blue Wave ranked figures provide the NCO and officer command elements that give the squad its hierarchy. This split-era approach — Galaxy Collection rank-and-file, Blue Wave command — is the most practical way to build an accurate Phase I Clone squad display at current production quality for the standard Troopers while filling the rank gap that the Galaxy Collection programme hasn’t addressed.
Buy the Blue Wave #13 for: the red Captain rank markings which have no Galaxy Collection equivalent; completing the Blue Wave numbered sequence; or a Geonosis Arena display requiring the three-tier Phase I rank structure alongside the Blue Wave Sergeant.
The three Blue Wave Phase I Clone Trooper variants — standard white from the Orange Wave, green Sergeant at #07, red Captain here — represent the complete lower-rank Phase I officer structure in a single production era. For collectors building a comprehensive Blue Wave display, the presence of all three at the same production quality creates the most visually coherent multi-rank Clone army display possible without mixing eras. The standard white army builder is the Orange Wave figure; the ranking NCOs and officers are Blue Wave.
