Clone Trooper Sergeant — Star Wars The Black Series #07
The Black Series Clone Trooper Sergeant — Blue Wave #07, 2014. Phase I armour with green Sergeant rank markings, blaster and blaster rifle. The first rank-differentiated Clone Trooper in the Black Series. Army builder guide.
Overview
Blue Wave #07 is the first rank-differentiated Clone Trooper in the Star Wars Black Series — Phase I armour repainted with the green markings that identify the Sergeant rank. This is a direct repaint of the Orange Wave Phase I Clone Trooper: same body, same articulation scheme, same accessories, same base proportions. Green paint on the helmet dividers, chest armour trim, pauldrons, and lower leg panels marks the rank difference.
The repaint strategy is the fundamental logic of the Clone Trooper variant programme across the Black Series. Hasbro invests in one excellent Phase I body — the sculpt here captures the rounder helmet and less angular chest armour of the pre-Phase II design accurately — and differentiates through colour for rank and unit variants. Understanding this means understanding what you’re buying: the Clone Trooper Sergeant earns its place as the squad leader in a ranked unit display, not as a standalone character figure. MSRP $19.99.
Clone Trooper Rank Colour System
The Phase I Clone Trooper rank colour system is one of the more systematically designed elements of the Republic military aesthetic in Star Wars. Colour-coding rank on otherwise identical armour makes command structure legible at a visual glance — essential for a military force composed of genetically identical soldiers.
Phase I rank colours: Standard Trooper (white, no marking); Sergeant (green); Lieutenant (blue); Captain (red); Commander (yellow); ARC Trooper (various complex patterns).
The Sergeant is the non-commissioned officer rank — the small-unit leader commanding a squad of standard Troopers in close-quarters combat. One step below Captain, one above standard Trooper. In the films the rank differentiation is visible in the Geonosis Arena sequences of Attack of the Clones and throughout The Clone Wars animated series.
A display mixing standard white Troopers, a green Sergeant, and a red Captain creates an immediate visual hierarchy that reads as a genuine military unit. The Black Series has Phase I options for all three ranks in the Blue Wave sequence — standard Trooper from the Orange Wave, Sergeant here, Captain at Blue Wave #13.
Accessories
Two accessories: a DC-15S blaster carbine and a DC-15A blaster rifle, both with grey paint highlights distinguishing them from the base moulding colour.
Both weapons fit well in either hand. The DC-15A blaster rifle creates the most convincing patrol and at-ready pose at standard display distances. The DC-15S carbine works better for a guarding or closer-quarters stance. Having both allows weapon variety across multiple copies in an army-builder arrangement without repetition.
Sculpt and Articulation
The Phase I Clone Trooper sculpt captures the specific design characteristics that distinguish it from Phase II: the rounder helmet dome, the split visor without the cheek indentations of the later design, the less angular chest armour, and the proportions associated with Attack of the Clones and early Clone Wars. These are not minor details — Phase I and Phase II Clone Troopers are different armour generations that appear in different periods of the war and different production eras.
The green rank markings are cleanly applied with consistent coverage across all designated panels. The belt is permanently attached. There is no head beneath the helmet.
Articulation covers 22 points: ball-jointed neck, ball-jointed shoulders, swivel biceps, dual elbow swivels, ball-jointed wrists, ball-jointed waist, ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, above and below knee swivels, ball-jointed ankles. The shoulder armour limits full arm elevation as with all clone variants.
Army Building Strategy
The Sergeant earns its place in a display as one element of a ranked squad — one Sergeant as the visual focal point positioned slightly forward of two to four standard white Troopers. The green markings read at shelf distance as the command element of the unit. For a Geonosis Arena display — where Phase I Clones deploy for the first time in Attack of the Clones — the Sergeant belongs in a mixed squad alongside standard Troopers and an optional Captain.
The Galaxy Collection Phase I Clone Trooper (AOTC) from the Attack of the Clones sub-line is the current army builder recommendation for standard white Troopers. The Blue Wave Sergeant and Captain provide rank differentiation that the Galaxy Collection basic Trooper does not offer, and no Galaxy Collection Phase I Sergeant update has been produced. If you want an accurate multi-rank Phase I squad display, this Blue Wave figure is a necessary purchase.
For Order 66 displays, Phase II armour is historically accurate — Order 66 was executed in Phase II configuration. See the Order 66 scene guide.
Production Context
The Clone Trooper Sergeant arrived in a wave that also included significant non-clone releases — Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the TIE Fighter Pilot. Its position at #07 placed it at the midpoint of the Blue Wave’s character roster, reflecting a production strategy that balanced popular named characters with the army-builder trooper variants that drove repeat purchases. The green Sergeant markings gave collectors an immediate reason to buy even if they already owned the standard white Clone Trooper from the Orange Wave.
The figure was later complemented in the same Blue Wave by the Clone Trooper Captain (P2-13) with red markings, completing the NCO-to-officer rank pair for Phase I multi-rank squad displays. Both remain the only Black Series Phase I ranked Clone Trooper variants.
Verdict
The Galaxy Collection AOTC Phase I Clone Trooper is the army builder recommendation for standard white Troopers.
Buy the Blue Wave Sergeant for: rank-differentiated Phase I squad displays where the green Sergeant marking has no Galaxy Collection equivalent; completing the Blue Wave numbered sequence; or the Geonosis Arena display requiring Phase I multi-rank visual hierarchy.
Secondary Market
The Blue Wave Clone Trooper Sergeant is available at or below original retail. Army builders who want multiple copies for squad displays find loose examples readily available. No significant variants documented. The Clone Trooper Captain at Blue Wave #13 is the natural secondary purchase for collectors wanting the three-tier Phase I rank display.
