Overview

Luke Skywalker with X-34 Landspeeder is the SDCC 2017 exclusive at $89.99 — the largest and most ambitious set in the Black Series 6” convention exclusive programme to that point, and a celebration of A New Hope for the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. The Landspeeder was also released at regular retail during Fall 2017, but the SDCC version is meaningfully different: exclusive paint decoration, a different and movable engine, and the premium packaging. The Luke figure itself is also different from the standard Black Series Luke #21 (id=4744): new head sculpt, much thinner tunic fabric, and different paint application. 23 joints including double-jointed elbows and swivel biceps — the configuration that lets Luke raise the binoculars directly to his eyes.

The Figure

Eight accessories covering Luke’s Tatooine loadout: soft-goods tunic (removable but the belt makes it very difficult; the fabric is very thin and Luke’s skin shows through it), belt (droid caller and pouches permanently attached, not truly removable), lightsaber with removable blade (hilt hooks to a clip on the belt), binoculars (the double elbows specifically allow raising them to eye level — soft plastic flap clips to the belt), floppy hat (good fit), rifle (poor fit in hands, can’t be raised to aim properly, but can be mounted on the right side of the Landspeeder), and poncho (looks great, pulls over the head easily). Weathering on the boots looks great; more used-look on the full outfit would have been welcome but wasn’t included.

The Landspeeder

The SDCC Landspeeder differs from the retail version in paint deco and the movable engine. A button on the front rotates the engine when pressed. The hood opens to reveal the engine interior. On the hood: a small round panel that opens separately, and a sensor that rotates 360°. Two panels in the back open: the right one is empty and provides storage for Luke’s extra accessories; the left reveals more engine detail. The windshield unplugs for removal. The seats have a rustic look with scratches — deliberately aged detailing. Paint under the hood was also decorated, matching the prop beautifully.

Crew Fit

Luke fits behind the steering wheel, but it’s a tight fit. Obi-Wan fits in the passenger seat, also tightly. C-3PO can be placed behind Luke but the legs don’t bend enough — his rear sticks up noticeably. R2-D2’s back sensor peg hole doesn’t function well as a stability peg — the sensor is too short to connect tightly. Steering wheel is not movable.

Secondary Market

SDCC 2017. Verify all eight figure accessories including the poncho, hat, and rifle. Confirm the Landspeeder’s engine button still functions, windshield is present, and both rear panels open cleanly.

Verdict

Luke Skywalker with X-34 Landspeeder earns its $89.99 price as a display centrepiece — exclusive-deco vehicle with a functioning engine mechanism, an eight-accessory Luke with double-elbow binocular capability, and packaging described as a wonderful celebration of 40 years of Star Wars. The thin tunic fabric and rifle grip are honest notes on an otherwise exceptional set.
