Sandtrooper Corporal — Star Wars The Black Series #01

The Black Series Sandtrooper Corporal — Blue Wave #01, 2014. Black shoulder pauldron, six accessories including two blaster rifles, backpack and ammo pouch. Collector guide covering the figure, display options, and where it sits in the Sandtrooper lineup.

Overview

The Sandtrooper Corporal opens the Blue Wave at #01 — a deliberate choice by Hasbro to lead the wave’s reset numbering with an armoured trooper rather than a named hero. That decision aged well. Armoured figures don’t carry the pre-Photo Real burden that haunts every Blue Wave human character portrait. The Sandtrooper Corporal can stand beside a 2024 Galaxy Collection figure without the quality gap being immediately visible. The same cannot be said of the wave’s Obi-Wan Kenobi or Luke Skywalker.

This is a repaint of the Orange Wave Sandtrooper, which carried an orange Sergeant pauldron. The black pauldron here marks the Corporal rank, one step below Sergeant — and represents the most common trooper rank visible in the Mos Eisley street sequences of A New Hope. The weathering application is also revised: Tatooine dust is more concentrated in the armour’s crevices than on the original release. Whether that reads as improvement or variation is a matter of personal preference, but it’s a genuine sculptural difference rather than a straight reissue.

Six accessories at a $19.99 MSRP — the best-equipped single Sandtrooper in the line. UPC 630509234387.

The Character and Scene Context

Sandtroopers are the Imperial garrison troops deployed on Tatooine to search for the Death Star plans carried by R2-D2 and C-3PO. Equipped with a life-support backpack, additional moisture vaporator maintenance tools, and the colour-coded shoulder pauldron identifying their rank within the unit, they patrol Mos Eisley on foot and mounted on Dewbacks throughout the first act of A New Hope.

The pauldron colour system gives Sandtrooper displays their visual hierarchy. Black denotes Corporal. Orange denotes Sergeant. White marks a Squad Leader. The rank structure is clearly visible in the film: the pauldron tells you at a glance which trooper is in command of the others. A display mixing black and orange pauldron Sandtroopers — this figure alongside the Orange Wave Sandtrooper — creates an accurate multi-rank squad with real narrative logic behind the colour variation.

Accessories

Six accessories: a black shoulder pauldron (removable), a backpack, an ammo pouch, two SE-14r blaster rifles, and an E-11 blaster pistol.

The backpack plugs into a dedicated socket in the figure’s back and holds securely across all poses. A small hole inside the backpack accepts the ammo pouch peg, which then hangs forward over the figure’s left shoulder. This chain of connected accessories — backpack, then pouch, then hanging — is worth taking time to assemble correctly because the display result is significantly more convincing than either piece used independently. The hip-mounted ammo pouches are permanently moulded into the belt and cannot be removed.

Both rifles fit well in either hand. The blaster pistol holsters acceptably in the moulded hip holster, and fits better as a handheld prop. For active patrol poses the longer rifle reads most naturally at shelf distance; the pistol works better for the at-rest guarding configuration.

Sculpt and Articulation

The armoured design is what makes this figure hold up across production eras. The sculpt doesn’t need to capture a human face — it needs to accurately render Stormtrooper armour panel proportions, the ribbed undersuit visible at the gaps, and the Tatooine weathering application. On all three counts the figure works. The sand accumulation in the armour joints and crevices reads as deliberate character rather than factory contamination.

Articulation covers 23 points: ball-jointed neck, swivel neck, ball-jointed shoulders, swivel biceps, dual-swivel elbows, ball-jointed wrists, ball-jointed waist, ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, above and below knee swivels, ball-jointed ankles. The shoulder armour constrains the upper arms as with all Stormtrooper figures, but the lower body articulation is generous for the era. No balancing issues in any standard display configuration.

Versions and Display Context

Three Black Series Sandtrooper releases exist: the Orange Wave version with orange Sergeant pauldron, this Blue Wave Corporal with black pauldron, and the 2025 Galaxy Collection ANH Sandtrooper with updated sculpt and current production standards.

For a Mos Eisley scene display, the Corporal is the most accurate rank for the street patrol visible throughout the Mos Eisley cantina approach sequence. Pair with Greedo, Ponda Baba, Doctor Evazan, and the Figrin D’an band for a comprehensive cantina-adjacent display. See the Mos Eisley scene guide for the full sourcing list.

For an army builder display specifically, note that this figure’s six-accessory loadout gives individual copies distinct weapon configurations — one holding a rifle at port arms, one with the blaster pistol drawn, one with the rifle slung — which adds variety to a multi-copy squad without requiring additional figures or accessories.

For a Blue Wave historical display, this figure opens the sequence at #01 and contextualises the wave’s production approach. The pre-Photo Real era of the human figures that follow reads as a product of its time when anchored by this technically stronger trooper release.

Secondary Market and Availability

The Blue Wave Sandtrooper Corporal is widely available on secondary markets at prices close to or below its original retail price. The 2025 Galaxy Collection update limits demand from display-quality seekers, keeping prices modest for loose complete examples. Carded examples in genuinely good box condition carry a small premium for Blue Wave numbered sequence collectors. No significant production variants have been documented for this release.

The figure was part of a wave assortment that also included Bossk, Han Solo Stormtrooper Disguise, and repacks of Chewbacca and the TIE Pilot — a common retail case configuration that helped this figure reach relatively wide distribution.

Verdict

The 2025 Galaxy Collection ANH Sandtrooper is the current display recommendation for most collectors — updated sculpt, Photo Real era production standards, better engineering.

Buy the Blue Wave Corporal for: completing the Blue Wave numbered sequence; the specific black Corporal pauldron which is not replicated in any other Black Series Sandtrooper release; the six-accessory loadout which remains the most generous hardware count of any Black Series Sandtrooper; and army-builder displays where weapon variety across multiple copies adds display value.
