Captain Rex — Phase II (Hascon 2017) — Star Wars The Black Series

Overview

Captain Rex (Hascon) is a Hascon 2017 exclusive at $24.99 — the first realistic 6” Black Series release of Captain Rex in Phase II armour, and one of the most significant Clone Wars character figures in the Phase 3 Red Line. A limited run was made available via HasbroToyShop.com after the convention for collectors who couldn’t attend. CT-7567, commander of the 501st Legion under Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, the Clone Wars’ most recognisable Clone officer and one of the few who questioned what it meant to choose your own path. 23 joints — full Phase 3 above-baseline configuration.

Five Accessories

Rex ships with the most comprehensive Clone trooper weapon set in the Black Series 6” programme at that point:

DC-15A blaster rifle — the long configuration. Fits well in the hands.

Two DC-17 hand blasters — Rex’s signature dual-wield sidearms, with the distinctive blue 501st markings. Both fit into the holsters. Both hands accept trigger-finger grip, right hand the cleaner of the two.

DC-15S blaster carbine — the mid-length configuration, a third distinct weapon type.

Removable helmet — fits easily over the head but leaves a small gap at the bottom where the chin shows through slightly. The target-finder on the helmet moves up and down. The helmet’s dirt application looks fantastic — described as looking like Rex tried to clean it but couldn’t reach some of the smaller grooves, which is the exactly right character note for a veteran soldier’s worn gear.

Paint and Detail

The paint application is well done overall. Lots of subtle dirt on the armour throughout — a marked improvement over cleaner Clone releases. The sides of the shins were missed (pristine white against the weathered rest of the armour), which is the one paint gap. The kill count markings on the legs, arms, and helmet are present and look cool — these are Rex’s accumulated record of enemy combatants across the Clone Wars, rendered as tally marks in the blue 501st scheme.

The Face and Morrison Likeness

The face sculpt looks good and comes quite close to a Temuera Morrison likeness — appropriate since all Clone troopers share Morrison’s DNA. This is the non-photo-real version; Hasbro released the photo-real face technology update as the Spring 2018 mainline Rex (id=10110). Collectors who prioritise face accuracy will want the photo-real version; collectors who want the Hascon exclusive version for completeness or provenance will want this one.

The Hascon Context

Hascon 2017 was Hasbro’s own consumer convention — a short-lived but significant event that produced a handful of high-value exclusives. Rex was the centrepiece Black Series release of the show. The limited HasbroToyShop.com run gave non-attendees access, but supply was constrained enough that secondary market prices reflected the demand.

Secondary Market

Hascon 2017 / HasbroToyShop.com limited. Five accessories: DC-15A rifle, two DC-17 hand blasters, DC-15S carbine, removable helmet. Confirm all five are present. The two small DC-17s are identical so confirm two are included rather than one doubled. The target-finder on the helmet should still be movable.

Verdict

Captain Rex (Hascon) is the essential Phase II Rex in 6” scale — five named weapons covering Rex’s full arsenal, kill count markings, a helmet with functioning target-finder and great dirt weathering, and a face sculpt close to the Morrison likeness. The small chin gap on the helmet and the pristine shins are the honest notes. The photo-real version is the better face; this version is the more exclusive release. Both have their place.
